Mette Borup Kristensen. Born in 1978 in Denmark, lives and works in Copenhagen. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Florence, Italy, in 2005 and later took a course in new techniques in printmaking at Atelier Agerbo, Copenhagen. Member of Association of Danish Printmaking Artists and DBF (union for visual artists).

On my work. Creating text and pictures that bounce off each other, collide, and create new possibilities for interpretation, is a central element in my work. I work with different printmaking techniques such as linocut and etchings, experimenting and combining these techniques in different ways. I work in series and consider the exhibition space as an installation. The pictures tell complex stories giving way to a variety of interpretations in the form of dreams, symbols and bits of memory from ones day, but at the same time allowing for spookiness, kitsch, romance, and humor. The contradictions are electric with opposites such as the childish versus the sexual. The themes I currently examine in my work are identity, femininity, sexuality and religiosity.

Encyclopedia is the overall title of a project I started in 2008 which includes a series of exhibitions and publication of artist books that, as the title indicates, are books of reference. The first book in the series, The Secret Agent was published in 2009. In an ordinary encyclopedia various words are described and explained. This encyclopedia however is made up of pictures and text which can be interpreted in many different ways. Each chapter contains a little story that has to do with the word you look up, however these stories are not explained logically or in chronological order. The plot will then be decided by the readers/viewers themselves, taking clues from references and other key words in the text.
